Bill Crooks joined my lucky dog, Spike, and me on a SIRS/Jolly Hookers Derby. Tuesday. We landed 12, released 5. 1 King 16”, 9 Kokanee to 14”, 2 Rainbows to 14” (all clean). We lost 3-4 had 6-8 hits/no stick. 6 hours, 11 miles. Water 65.6-70*; air 52-92*, sky clear; wind 0-4 mph. We trolled the Skiers’ Cove bank & off the Big Island at 0.8-1.3 mph (GPS) at 42-52’ down on downriggers. Caught most using a Radical Glo Pink Tube 2-hook rig with 2 kernels of Shoe Peg corn/hook or corn on one hook a small piece of Anchovy on the other. Garlic scent for most. Also caught 3 with a Radical Glo Pink spinner/beads. It was early for us fishing Berryessa but great company, decent catching.

Put in a lot of time Friday and Saturday for very few fish. Trolled for about 10 hours for three keepers. Fished with cut bait for about three hours for two small keepers. The water on the Sacramento side of the delta is really dirty – made trolling difficult. We covered water from Antioch all the way up to the deep water channel and up into Isleton and Steamboat. Caught fish on both the San Joaquin and Sacramento side of the delta. We never found a hot spot or a time when the action was any good. Just a few fish here and there.

I attended the SIRS/Jolly Hookers Fishing Club breakfast meeting. When I got home my lucky dog, Spike, told me my wife Donna had called & would not be home from visiting out twin grandsons until late afternoon. He said he has missed seeing the cows down at Sherman Island would I consider taking him out? Normally I would have fished out of there 5-10 times by this time of the year, not once thus far this year. We picked up the boat. I've itching to try below Sherman Island on the Sac River and was skunked for satisfying my curiosity, took one for the team trying that water out. 3.5 hours, 40 miles. Water 64.7-65.1*, dirty; air 75-78*, sky clear; wind 8-12 mph. Shallow trolled Clown Yo-Zuris 140’ back at 5 mph (water speed) in 6-8’ of water and Rebels and Yo-Zuris deep at 2.25-3 mph 12-15’ deep, 55-75' back. We launched at Lower Sherman Island and tried all the usual places down to Collinsville & on the Sac River below the Rio Vista Bridge. The water was dirty everywhere. The water higher up the Sac & on the Mokelumne River has definitely been cleaner, better trolling water thus far this year.

FRIDAY MAY 9th..............................Guy Brown & Bill Crooks invited me as a guest to attend the monthly JOLLY HOOKERS fishing club in Folsom.....The guest speaker for the day was my good friend & fellow fisherman Al Ezell ( Big Al's Guide Service ) Al gave a terrific seminar on lake fishing for Kokes & landlocked Kings....While, I'm primarily a delta fisherman and spend very little time lake fishing, I found this group very interesting, friendly, and well organized....Knowing this fishing club promotes many fun derbies throughout the year,it also involves youth fishing for kids with special problems..Very heart warming for sure. It was my pleasure meeting lots of new fellow fisherman ....Thanks for the invite Guy & Bill...Naked..

Wow, the most wind I have had out of Brannon Island, trolled everywhere for 5 hours for nada Delta south and north of Rio Vista Bridge, Deep Water Channel, Snug area, etc.. Finally at the shallowest part of that minus tide, caught 5 up to 40" .. Yep a 40" striper, don't know how much it weighed, but I would say at least 25# probably more... Of for the halibuts tomorrow....

My luck dog, Spike, and I caught & released 10 legals to 8#, most 5-7#, lost 1, 1 undersized, had no hit/no stick, lost 2 tails. It was very windy for 3-4 hours. The best bite was during the first 2 hours of the outgoing and 1st hour of the incoming tides. 8 hours, 43 miles. Water 63.5-65*, semi-clear to clear; air 53-72*, sky clear; wind 6-35 mph. Shallow trolled Clown & Rainbow Yo-Zuris 140’ back at 5 mph (water speed) in 6-8’ of water. We launched at Hogback & trolled the Sac R and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge.

TUESDAY MAY 6th...............................THE BITE GOES ON!!!! Company for the day was Robert from the Elk Grove Shell station..While the National Weather Service called for 10 - 25 knots in the delta ,we experienced nothing over 15 knots!.....Thanks Fish Gods....Another day of minus tides had the water conditions on the murky side but not bad enough to alter another good bite day....Best action without a doubt was the outgoing tide & the bite continued into the turn-around incoming tide...We used only one color Yo-zuri.....Char/Silver with spots.....While we got good numbers of fish, this was a day of many lost fish & many tail takers!! Enjoyed two doubles & the largest fish going 12 pounds...Out of the 21 stripes caught, it was a mixed bag of post spawned & still ripe females....Noticed the veteran fisherman around us also did very well as others struggled with boat speed or keeping their shallow running lures in the zone....Still a problem with other boaters not clearing the fishing lanes after a hookup...It so simple to just motor off to the center of the river instead of blocking other boats behind you.....Frustrating!!!! Oh well. thats group fishing...On the way back to Hogback did a little swimbait throwing & while didn't find the stripes in Steamboat did hook into the largest largemouth of the season....A 7 & 1/2 pound bucketmouth!!! And no camera in the boat....I know thats not a big thing for all you Basser's but it was exciting to me.....Another good day on the delta & thanks for the company Robert...See ya on the water.....Naked...

Pastor Steve invited me join him for the day. The plan was to meet Jeff Braden at Snug Harbor & have him follow us around. We shallow trolled for striped bass in 12-16 mph winds and the last half of a -5.5’ outgoing tide and the first part of +4.0’ incoming tide. We caught 9 legal stripers (released 7) to 13#, 10#, most of the rest 4 & 5#, lost 4, two undersized, had 3-4 hit/no sticks, lost 4-6 tails. We trolled the Sac River & its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. 7 hours, 36 miles. Water 62.5-65.2*, semi-clear; air 55-72*, sky clear; wind 4-20 mph. We shallow trolled Clown & Chartreuse/Black dot Yo-Zuris shallow 140’ back at 4.3-5.2 mph (GPS speed, no paddle wheel or RPM gauge) in 6-8’ of water. We launched at Hogback and had Jeff following us shortly thereafter. Jeff tried to cope with wind, a troublesome motor and unfamilar water and decided to accept an offer to join us in Steve's boat. We ended up having a good day despite the winds. Thanks for the invite and company Steve, hope Jeff enjoyed himself.

SUNDAY MAY 4th............Broke away from the delta, and returned to East Reservoir hoping to have a field day catching bass & crappie....Don't remember working so hard in many years locating & catching these coastal mountain bass!! Did find a mixed bag of post spawned & spawning bass in water less than 15 feet deep. Most fishing was sight fishing finding fish in the shallow coves and trying to get them to react with drop/shot Robo worms....Did OK with the larger Senko worms with no weight...It seems the smaller bass would race in front of the bigger ones & take the baits before the lunkers had a chance to react!!! Looking at last years records at this time of the year, we caught nearly a hundred !!! and had 30-40 crappie fishing days.....Could be, I picked a day when the bite was off? Also, could not find the balls of bait or bass in the deeper water like last year...My wife & myself managed to catch less than 20 bass all day with just one that went 5 pounds...and one crappie!! Oh well, whats a tank of gas and maybe we got spoiled with the big numbers last year...Still a fun day....Naked..

5/3/2008 – Launched with Jason at Brannon Island at 6:00 am. We fished with anchovies and shad on the outgoing tide at the mouth of Threemile Slough and the San Joaquin River from 6:30 until about 9:00 am. Not much action and only a 16” shaker to show for it. We moved over to the west bank and started trolling at about 9:30 am. We used shallow running Yozuri’s and Bombers for zero hits. We covered water all the way from the power lines up into Cache Slough, Steamboat Slough, and above the Rio Vista bridge. We only saw one fish netted all day – there were boats everywhere. We had to get off the water at 12:45 pm to head home. About 20 miles of water covered for a big skunkola. Off the water at 1:00 pm. The water temperature was 66 degrees.

I took my good friend Jon Thompson and his dad out for a little kokanee action. We had a great day of fishing, starting at 630 in the morning till about 230 in the afternoon. The best bite was from morning till about noon. We landed 9 out of 15 fish. 7 kokanee, and 2 trout. 3 of the kokanee were over 2lbs each. It was a great day of fishing, not as many boats on the lake as on Saturdays. The fish were hooked between 30 and 45 feet. I was using my kokanee bugs.

Bill Crooks invited me join him and Bob Harries (The Naked Fisherman) for a day of shallow trolling & throwing Fish Traps for Striped Bass and to show him how to troll for Delta Smallmouth Bass. We caught 8 legal stripers (all shallow trolling, released 4) to 9#, most 7 & 8#, lost none, no undersized, had no hit/no sticks, lost 2 tails. We caught & released 4 Smallmouths. 8 hours, 40 miles. Water 63.5-64*, semi-clear to dirty; air 55-72*, sky high overcast; wind 2-4 mph. We fished the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. We shallow trolled Clown & Chartreuse/Black dot Yo-Zuris shallow 140’ back at 5 mph in 7-9’ of water. The Char/Black dot Yo-Zuris caught most of the stripers. We launched at Hogback. We trolled the end of the outgoing, slack & most of the incoming tide. There was no one tide, place, large school of stripers today. It was pretty much a scratch day for us and all of the other fishermen we talked to. It was great, however, being on the water with Bill & Bob. Thanks for the invite Bill.

Pastor Steve Murakami & I went trolling for stripers in the wind! We caught & released 20 legals to 8+#, most 5-7#, lost none, 2 undersized, had 3-4 hit/no stick, lost 3-4 tails. We left fish to get Steve home in time for daughter's soccer game/college entrance exam testing. The best bite, again, was during the first 2 hours of the outgoing tide. 7 hours (felt like a long week-end), 41 miles. Water 61.7-63*, semi-clear to clear; air 53-76*, sky clear; wind 2-30 mph. Shallow trolled Clown (11)& Chartreuse w/black dots (9) Yo-Zuris 140’ back at 5 mph in 5-8’ of water. We launched at Hogback and trolled the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. There were some really good fishermen on the water today, Mark Wilson, Ron Retzlaff, Bob White & Ron Jones, Bob Sparre, etc. Unusual happenings: (1) Guy catches a striper with a DFG tag! (2) Steve catches a striper with a $100 DFG tag! (3) Guy gets a call from the father whose daughter lost the surf rod/reel I trolled up which he will pick up Thursday. (4) Guy & Steve fish and catch fish in 25-30 mph winds for the first time. At the end of the day Steve gives Guy gas money and a “tip” (I'll pay him back somehow) for him catching the striper with the $100 DFG tag (what a guy!).

APRIL 26th & 27th.......Saturday & Sunday......... IF YOU DIDN'T GET BIT ON THESE TWO DAYS,YOU DIDN'T HAVE YOUR LURE IN THE WATER!!!! Yeah. there was a ton of boats out and with two Derbies going on it was hard to find unchartered water.....It was a mixed bag of fisherman for sure, from guides to novice to just your average every day fisherman.....Bottom line, just about all caught fish!! ...Most fish were in the two to eight pound class with an occasional fish in the teens...Best bite was the outgo...A QUICK SUMMARY.....SATURDAY.......Had my wife with me and we barely got a parking spot at Hogback at 8:00am.....Don't know what group was having a one day derby? But they were using the picnic grounds as a weigh in & BBQ area....Looked like fun & well organized.....Started the morning off shallow trolling the lower Steamboat area just at the top of the tide......Enjoyed a mini bite that lasted less than an hour, but managed to pick up some quality fish to 13 lbs....Decided to check out community shoals around 11:00am....Never saw so many boats at the shoals!! The good news was I had friends involved in the trolling lanes like Mark W. & Fireman Jack....and a pretty good bite was taken place...So. we joined in & dropped out lines and got bit right away.....With all the boat action it didn't seem to bother Mr. Striper one bit....as fish were caught all day...These fish in the Rio Vista area were very bright in color & must be fresh run!! The males were free flowing milt as we released them...Messy stuff....Numbers of fish caught had to be in the hundreds on Saturday just at the shoals!!! Fireman Jack's numbers were at 27 fish by 1:00pm...Who knows how many Mark got? Lots of hook-ups in his boat...and big numbers for all the guide boats...Fished the shoals right to the bottom of the tide ( 4:30pm.) and the bite slowed somewhat but you still had decent action.......Sunday.....Returned to the shoals once again...Less boats & the bite had tapered off compared to Saturday...Had to work alittle harder for hook-ups but the stripes continued to keep us busy....Unlike Saturday, we moved over to the Dairy area for a short time and did very well there but the stripes were running on the small size so we returned to the shoals & worked that area till the end of the day....You know the fish are on a good bite when you hook up reeling in as we must have caught 6-7 fish doing just that!! While I rarely fish both Saturday & Sunday being retired, glad my wife Sandy & I did...Will have to get my butt into Fishermans warehouse & replenish my Yo-Zuries as most of my clown colored lures are pretty tore up with the numbers of fish caught the past two months!!! Nice seeing Leo Castro & Tom Ramage out this weekend...Sorry you lost the big one Tom.......And, for the record, my wife once again out fished me...But, she had a good Captain.....See ya on the river...Naked...

My good friends Biff and Dennis (Rattle Trap) joined me. This was there first ever live bait bay trip. Launched at Berkley 10 minutes to 6 and got bait. Headed to the Berkley Flats for 2 hrs for 0. Ran over to the Alameda area and found a HUGE Fleet. We made about 3 drifts for about 4 hard pulling rays. Boy can these pull you line. Ran up to a light that I had good luck in the past. As soon as Rattle Trap drops his Chovey a 22 lb Butt grabs on. His first ever Halibutt. We box it. He drops back in Bam a 21 lb butt grabs on. In the box it goes. His beginner luck carrys on later to land a 23 incher. He fills his limit on his first ever Halibutt trip. Biff and myself didn't get left out. Biff gets a 31 inch butt and a short one of 21!/2 inches. I land a 23 incher on our last drift of the day at 4 pm. We ended the day keeping 5 fish 22,21,12 lbs being biggest weights and two at 31 and 23 inches. Fished the delta today with some buds and caught Two six pounders and two twenty inchers and about two dozen shakers. Most fish that I saw caught where either shakers or 1 to 2 pounders. The lure of the day was a red and white Yo-zuri. I had the pleasure of meeting the NakedFisherman, and I also saw Mr. Wilson on the water. P.S. Why do people put the fish on the stringer and drag the fish as they are trolling? Is it like a trophy for others to see? Some one please shed some light because I just dont get it.

I brought my good friend Bill Bushey out to fish black bass yesterday. We didn't get skunked this time. We caught 17 legals and 3 shakers. Bill caught 6 legal were from 1lb to 2lbs. 10oz. He did very well for using a spinning rig in the tules and timber. My best were 5lbs. 3oz, 4lbs. 4oz, and 4lbs.2oz. My others ranged from 1lb to 2lbs 6oz. Pastor Steve and I caught & released 12 legals to 11#, most 5-8#, lost 2, 6 undersized, had 6-8 hit/no stick, lost 12 tails. Steve had the hot stick today. 7 hours, 43 miles. Water 60.2#, semi-clear to clear; air 53-65*, sky partly cloudy to overcast; wind 2-14 mph, gusts to 20. Shallow trolled clown Yo-Zuris with a 6" Trick Worm shallow 140’ back at 5 mph in 5-8’ of water. We launched at Hogback and were trolling shortly after 7 a.m. We did not anticipate finding many fish so we decided to stay in an area where we lost 2 tails. We fished the same area all day, a first for us. This was also the most successful day we’ve had in the highest sustained winds we’ve fished. We fished the Sacramento River & its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. When we get back to Sacramento and finish de-rigging the boat Steve takes off for his daughter’s game in Marysville (what a Dad). A day we nor expecting much turned out great. Thanks, as always, for the company Steve.

Charlie and I took a drive to yuba city launch ramp hoping to see the parking lot full of trailers ...... not a trailer in parking lot ..... we did see they have put in a very nice walk on ramp ..... went to JOHNSONS BAIT and talked to people there and they said the water flow was so low the fish can't get up through the rapids ..... on the way home we went to BOYDS PUMP and the same thing there not a trailer in the parking lot and they also have put in a nice but short walk on ramp ..... right now it just looks like a RIVER ...... out

We were trolling a little after 11 a.m., out before 4, trolled the end of a 4' outgoing, the slack & beginning of the 4' incoming tides. Trolled above & below the Rio Vista Bridge on the Sac River and its Sloughs. Not much of a bite today (3) but the incoming tide was a little better. Nice to get out for a few quick hours.

Fishing Report The past couple of weeks have seen an increase in the amounts and varieties of fish being taken. Colder waters have driven Tuna closer to shore, allowing us to hook Yellowfin Tuna on some of our 8 hour fishing tours. Inside the Bay we are catching Bonita, Sierra, and Rooster Fish. On our longer tours outside the bay ( 10 and 12 hour tours), we are catching Rooster Fish, Mahi Mahi, Striped Marlin, Sailfish, and 100lb. to 200 lb. Yellowfin Tuna. This month the fishing has been spectacular. The success this month has been second to none. Good health and good fishing John To check the tide tables http://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Ostiones.tide.shtml To check the moon phases http://www.stardate.org/nightsky/moon/ aztec_peinado@yahoo.com

I went out with my good friend Jon Thompson today. We started fishing the morning bite in the angel arm and caught two fish right when I set the downriggers. One was 9.5" and the other was 15", while landing the fish we got blown into a shallow spot and I hung my downrigger for about 2 seconds and then it exploded. The bite pretty much stopped and didn't start again till about noon. We ended up with 4 trout to 17 inches and 6 Kokanee to 16 inches. It was a good day for fish catching, but a bad day for one of my downriggers. All the fish except one were caught on my nerka nailer bugs (even the trout). The other fish was caught on a pink hoochie. The fish were lurking in the 25-38ft zone, and seem to go after orange and pink color combinations. To my old customers in the Rocklin area, I think it's worth the drive, the fish are nice size and are putting up a good fight. Tight lines, and hope to see you out on the water.

Me and the Swiss Miss tried trolling for trout friday, found a large area of fish on top of an under water island. Fish were in an area of 56 to 78 feet of water with the surrounding water down to 120 ft. We cought fish from top water, to 20 feet using lead core line. We used seps flashers with wedding rings and half a worm. Tried my down rigger but fish didn't like the noise the trolling wire made on that side of the boat, had this problem before and don't know how to fix it. The Swiss Miss cought 7 fish on her side and I finally caught 4 on my side after I quit using the down rigger, one fish fell off at the boat to give us our limit. The trout are in beautiful condition about a 14" average. Had a problem with the outboard electrical system and had to rope start the 50 hp 4 stroke. Bad week for me with motor problems as my trolling motor quit also before we went fishing. Water temp started at 60 and ended up at 65 degrees. Anybody have a solution on how to keep the trolling wire from singing? Off the water at 2.30 Lowell tight lines and loose drags

Today I couldn't pass up. Too many things were in my favor. The full moon is Sunday. And I've ready several times that the three days before the full moon is the best for fishing. And it was a weekday. Not too many fishermen out fishing! So I launched New Hope Landing at 7am with the high tide at 6:32am. I started casting my favorite 5' Senko worm (912) and was very excited cuz I new they would be biting today. Not like 3 weeks ago when I got skunked. I ended up with one limit of bass, They weighed 7lbs. 10, 4lbs. 10oz, 2lbs 8oz, 2lbs and 1lbs.12ozer. Good thing I went fishing instead of staying at home and saying "Maybe I should have went fishing." So get out there you fishermen and fish slow and patiently and you're sure to catch a lunker. Good fishin' Jerry Yuke

Friday. Jim Brown and I caught 8 legals to 12#, released 5, most 5-7# in 7.5 hours, 44 miles. Two undersized, lost one, lost 3-5 tails. Fished the last half of an outgoing & 1st part of an incoming tide (the better tide), all shallow trolling, small-lipped Rainbow Trout Yo-Zuri. Water 63-64*, clear to dirty, little debris on or suspended in the water; air 46-68*; sky clear; wind 2-7 mph. We launched at Hogback and were trolling at 7 a.m. We trolled several areas on the Sacramento River/its sloughs above & below Rio Vista. Non-fishing highlights: Jim & I snagged brought in an almost new surf rod/reel and saw 4 sea lions at Lite 36A (we saw one get up onto the Lite, finally saw how they do it). Another nice day on the Delta, thanks for the company Jim.

THURSDAY APRIL 17th....................Tom Ramage joined me for a day hunting stripes....Got a real late start as we didn't launch at Hogback till 9:30 am...It seems as though the bite was very early in the morning and we missed it!! I normally stay away from Decker,West bank, & the Dairy but on this day decided to join the crowd and give it a try...No fish for us at all three locations...However, did hook into a biggie at Clydes shoal ( now known as community shoal) Before this fish came un-buttoned, it had taking some 160 feet of line!! Was using the clown colored shallow diving Yo-zurie & we noticed one of the stock hooks was bent open....The fish was on long enough to raise my heartbeat to a pretty good level!! A short thrill for sure....I know a red hot bite took place earlier in the week but not on this day and for the number of boats on the water didn't see much action...In a nutshell, this was my worst performance in a Month...Fished the entire incoming tide & part of the outgo & couldn't get bit!!! Tom managed to get a 10 pounder on a swimbait and that was the highlight of the day.....The norm for me is being on the water just at the turn-around from the flood tide...It didn't pan out on Thursday!! Could be that Mr. Striper has changed his eating time schedule ? Gotta love this striper fishing!! Just when you think you have them figured out YOU DON'T!!! Back to the drawing board after the weekend....Thanks for the company Tom....See ya on the water...Naked.....

Fished above Rio Vista with a couple of friends. We caught a total of 10 fish with the biggest going 9lbs. We lost four fish by the boat and caught four shakers. The wind was very nippy but the water conditions have really improved. The lure of the day was an old school black and chrome Rebel. Today was also the first time with a double on my boat.

Sorry this report is a few days late, but I was busy working. lol. I took my good friend Eric Wood out on the water Saturday, and there were so many kokanee boats on the water I thought for sure a derby was going on that I didn't know about. I counted 56 boats in view on the main body. The fishing started out poor for me, but after two hours I had our first fish in the boat it and it came at 50 feet on one of my nerka nailer bugs. We had our best luck at 12 noon, with a triple hook up and then two more fish in two more passes. We landed 7 out of 8 fish and the depth range for 6 of them was between 25-38 feet. All our fish were landed on my bugs (orange, pink, yellow/pink). However, there were people reporting on the VHF that spinners were doing well ( mad irishman), and the avg catch per boat seemed to be 2 or 3 fish. I think the lake is going to turn on in the next few weeks. All the fish I have caught this year have been 15 inches or better with the largest going 17 TL. I can't wait to see what we will be catching in a couple months.

Tax Day! Tuesday. Pastor Steve invited me join he and his son, Andrew, for the day. We caught 16 legals to 12# (kept 5), 6-8 undersized, lost 6-12 tails in 7 hours, 30 miles. Fished an incoming tide most of the day, all shallow trolling, small-lipped Clown Yo-Zuri. Used three different Zoom 6” Trick Worms (White, White Ice, Grey (did not get to try Glimmer Blue)), all caught fish. Water 61.7-63.3*, clear to semi-clear, some debris on and suspended in the water toward the end of the incoming tide; air 46-65*; sky clear; wind 2-8 mph. We launched at Hogback and were trolling at 7:00 a.m. We trolled several areas on the Sac River above Rio Vista and its sloughs. Andrew landed a lot of fish today, he is getting pretty good at it. Steve thanks for the invite and time with you and Andrew.

TUESDAY APRIL 15th... TOTALLY NOT SURPRISED!!!! The unanimous decision by the California Fish & game Commission closes both commercial and recreational fishing in state coastal waters.,which extend out three miles from shore. It brings California into line with a vote last week in Seattle by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, which banned salmon fishing in federal waters reaching out 200 miles...........The commission delayed a vote on salmon-fishing restrictions in Central California rivers until its May 9th meeting. But it looks very likely that the rivers will also be closed to salmon fishing.....Salmon fishing has never been closed completely along the entire California coast. But fishery experts believe the closures are required to ensure survival of the Central valley fall-run chinook population. The specious is the backbone of the pacific coast's salmon fishery and is expected to see record-low spawning numbers this fall for reasons still not fully understood.....Commission chairman Richard Rodgers said the closures, together with the states's broader economic woes, pose a " PERFECT STORM "of problems that may drive many fishing businesses out of exsistence...The state predicts a $255 million economic impact and a loss of 2,263 jobs!!! as a result of the closures......THATS ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL VOTES I THINK WE'VE EVER TAKEN, " Rodgers said " I'm sorry we had to do that " ..................DON'T KNOW WHY ITS TAKING SO LONG TO PASS THE VERDIT???? WE ALL KNOW WHATS IN STORE..... Just some sad news to pass on....I'm out...Naked....

Sunday. My lucky dog, Spike, and I went out at the last minute. We caught & released 3 legals to 5# in 4 hours, 31 miles. Lost 2-3 tails. A rare week-end day to get out prior to a few windy days. Fished a mid outgoing tide, all shallow trolling small-lipped Clown & Rainbow Trout Yo-Zuris. Other persons who fished early in the day did well at, just after low tide. Water 66.7-69*, clear to semi-clear, considerable debris on and suspended in the water. It appeared that weekend boat traffic, power boat wakes really churned up the water, debris, weeds. Air 82-86*; sky clear; wind 2-5 mph. We launched at Hogback and were trolling at 1:00 p.m. Tried several places above & below the Rio Vista Bridge. Of note Spike got really excited seeing the goats eating in "military" formation on the West Bank hillside. Not much catching on this day but an important reminder of how lucky I am to seldom fish on weekends.

I couldn't get any of my regulars to go with on Friday. So I just went by myself and drove to Orwood Resort (On the Old River-South Delta) to launch. Got there about 8am. Slightly breezy! 10:22am high tide! The bass didn't bite that well for me. I fished all over the Old River stretch. And caught one 1# 12ozer near the Bascule Bridge on a Senko off a log. Then after fishing the Amtrak Cut and didn't get a hit I went south of the bridge and fished it all the way to the Woodward Canal. I kept saying to myself, "Don't anybody work anymore?" There were tons of boats out there. Mostly pleasure boats! Then I fished the Discovery Bay and picked up two l#ers. And that was it. I left at 5pm. At least I got that fishing that area out of my brain. I'd been wanting to fish that area for months. Better tides this week! That's it! Good fishing! Jerry Yuke

SATURDAY APRIL 12th......................RELAXATION AT ITS BEST........A day of low keyed basic angling with great surroundings.....Unlike the fast paced fishing in the delta like run & gun & fishing in crowds, my wife & myself shared the entire East reservoir with less than 8 other boats...We found the Crappie and bass and while it wasn't the best bite in the world, managed to catch fish all day......We located most bass in the many coves throughout this lake..These bass were staging in less than ten feet of water...My wife Sandy caught the biggest of the day, a very Fat 5 pounder....Best bait of the day was the short 5 inch Robo worms in the color of grape....We set them up drop/shot style.......Very effective method...We also found the crappie near the many fallen trees that are submerged over much of the lake and they too were close to spawning as they were extremely fat...The lake level is right at the top & many of the islands & rock structures are impossible to locate without the use of the electronics.....The bonus feature is watching all the wild life that surrounds this small coastal lake & mountain range....Deer, elk numerous specious of birds......Did have a mishap about the middle of day & it was totally my fault!! I left my trolling motor in the down position & ran my main motor very slowly to another part of the cove.....BANG!! hit a large rock & sheared the holding pin on the shaft that locks the motor in position....If anyone can tell me where I can get it fixed, I would be very grateful....I have heard of a place called something electrics? Don't know where it is in Sacto? Really need it for throwing swim baits in the delta....Thanks for any info.....Round trip was about $70,00 of gas but sometimes its worth the R&R you can receive for a laid back fishing adventure......See ya on the water....Naked.

I had the rare pleasure of taking my wife, Donna, out for a few hours to see the places Spike & I fish for stripers. Spike came along, of course. We caught & released 5 legals, 7, 6, 6, 5, 4#ers, one undersized in 3 hours, 15 miles. Lost 3-4 tails. All day shallow trolling, all on the small-lipped Clown Yo-Zuri. Water 62.7*, clear to semi-clear, very little debris; air 68-84*; sky clear; wind 2-5 mph. We launched at Hogback and trolled the Sac River and its sloughs above the Rio Vista Bridge. I had to crank down the drag, bring in the 7#er fast just ahead of a pursuing sea lion. A great day having my wife join me for a brief outing. Sure glad I got some fish to prove that not all of my fish stories are lies/exagerations.

Hogback at about 8:15 am. Talked with Naked Bob and he had a great day on Wednesday and one of crew, Ron fished same day and did ok and was back to guides us ..What happened is the fish must have had sore lips for those two catching and releasing on Wednesday. We moved on about 11 am. toward Minor ..Tough fishing there in very fast outgoing tides as bottom near wall were irregular so had to tend to steering at all times. After 3 hours we finely got into fish using BBR,s deeps and trolling very slow. The insides rods got most of fish. Total stripers 12, or which 3 were shakers and one black bass... Nice day all in all.

THURSDAY, APRIL 10th....................WHAT HAPPENED???? Went from an OUTSTANDING day on Weds to just an average day some 24 hours later!! Only thing different was there was more boats on the water but not too bad........And, yes the winds changed direction from South to Northerly, but still very fishable......Had Tom Ramage with me and was looking forward to a 20-30 fish count day......Didn't materialize!!! While other boats around us seemed to do well, we didn't get into the big bite..Thats the thing about chasing Stripers, just when you think your on the top of your game plan that will humble you in a heart beat!! And on Thursday they certainly did.....Tom & myself beat the water to death both trolling & throwing swimbaits and struggled to catch 10 fish.....Also ,went backwards on fish size as the largest one we boated was only 8 pounds and that came on a swimbait....Saw Bob White much of the day in his Jetcraft with his two friends...They had a slow start in the morning, but when we saw them later in the day they had caught bigger & more fish than Tom & myself...Way to go Bob!!.....Gonna break away from the stripes this weekend & head for East Reservoir by Stonyford...Promised my wife Sandy a day chasing CRAPPIE and maybe drop/shotting some bass? Weather looks good.....Looking forward for a change of scenery & this reservoir is very relaxing & low keyed with delicious white crappie...Hope there on the bite? See ya on the river. ....... Naked.

Columbia River continues to be on a roll for chinook!!! The Columbia River spring chinook fishery remains the hotbed on the fishing scene. "Spring chinook catches have been pretty strong, and there was a pretty good bite [Wednesday morning] from the [Portland] airport down to the railroad bridge just below the I-5 bridge," said Joe Hymer, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist. Anglers at the Marine Park boat ramp just above I-5 were averaging anywhere from two-thirds to three-quarters of a fish per boat. While some of the best sport catches have been coming from the airport downstream to the railroad bridge off Hayden Island and Vancouver, further upstream places like from Camas-Washougal up to Bonneville Dam have picked up. "The Port of Camas check showed they're still catching fish, and the best fishery has been up towards the dam," Hymer said. "One recent check showed it was a two-plus-fish-per-boat average, and Oregon was seeing the same catch rates." The portion of the Lower Columbia from the west power lines on Hayden Island to Buoy 10 has closed, but the river from the Hayden west power lines up to McNary Dam is open for fishing. "The Columbia spring chinook is the talk around town, and it is pretty much a no-brainer fishery," said Bryan Nelson at Three Rivers Marine and Tackle in Woodinville. "Trolling with a Fish Flash and cut-plug herring does the job, or anchor up and put down a Kwikfish." From April 1 to 6, an estimated 24,590 angler trips were made with 4,438 chinook kept and 624 released. "The [Bonneville] dam counts have broken 100 fish per day, but they are going to start spilling more water over the dam [beginning today] and that could spur more fish to move over the dam. Weds. April 9th...08...........................A PERFECT DAY!...... With no intent of hitting the water this morning as I was fooling around in the garden, looked around and noticed very little wind blowing in my trees....MAN I'M GOING!!...Got to hogback at 10 30 am...Instant success as I didn't go 40 yds & got my first fish....The tide had been going out for an hour or so and the bite was very aggressive. in less than an hour I caught & released 11 stripes to 12 lbs...With the tide about half away out went to throwing 1/2 oz swimbaits.......The stripes were on a tear!!! I would get a tap-tap & bang the rod would just load up...A few times they attacked the bait just a few feet from the boat. Got wet many times!!...At one point I managed to hook 3 fish in 4 cast.....The bite was so intense that I didn't have time to eat my lunch till late afternoon... I broke my personal record of catching 16 stripes in one outing by one....Got 17 stripers to 14 lbs.....On this day I had my batteries charged to the max & my electric motor held well....Towards the bottom of the tide & turnaround the action finally slowed down with just a fish here & there.....Headed for home by 4:45 pm....No marathon on this day......27 fish in about 5 hours solo.....Couldn't ask for a better day........Will be taking Tom Ramage out tomorrow.....Will be worried about the NORTH WINDS....Hope we don't get blown off......In a nutshell, bigger fish are in....See ya on the water...Naked...

Guy, Bill Crooks and Clyde Wands. A day devoted to learning more about the “other river”, the San Joaquin & its sloughs. Clyde Wands agreed to take Bill out to learn about the San Joaquin. Bill was gracious enough to invite me to join them (Ted Fagunes was too busy with golf). We knew it was unlikely we’d do as much catching as on the Sac-side. Bill’s Willy Boat. We launched at Brannan Island. 8.5 hours, 47 miles, 2 legals (22”, 19”. 2 other hits/lost tails). Water 58.4-59*, semi-clear to dirty, very little debris; air 44-67*; sky clear; wind 0-7 mph. We shallow & deep trolled, fish trapped 6-9 different locations, most on an outgoing tide, in a big circle, the water was semi-clear at best, trollable, but we never found fish. Bill and I learned a lot "for another day". Another nice day on the Delta, great company. Thanks for the invite Bill.

THURSDAY APRIL 3rd.....................A solo day once again....While the weather in metro Sacto was Balmy & windless, not so in the delta as the south/westerly winds returned with 5-15 mph gusts....But even with the choppy water conditions I managed to have a fairly good day....Picked up 5 stripes shallow trolling in the lower Steamboat area with best action just at the tide turn at about 9:30 am.....Worked this area very hard making pass after pass & most of the time not getting a bump!...Was kinda forced to stay inside Steamboat as the winds in the morning were blowing too hard in Cache & Rio Vista.....By noon the winds diminished somewhat allowing me to try different locations....Tried shallow trolling in Cache & deep water channel towards the flood stage but to be honest with you don't think the water was clear enough.....NO Fish!....Ended up going inside Minor & deep trolled for two fish And threw a little smimbaits as the tide started to turn out...Managed to pick up a 10 pounder and only a few bumps as the swimbait action was slow!...Late in the day returned to Steamboat & focused just on swimbaits as the tide had gone out some two feet....Even with the breezy conditions I found a pretty good bite throwing traps in the mud exposed area's.....missed many strikes as the boat rocked & rolled in the choppy water....Had a couple nice black bass on but both threw the bait off jumping....Fighting the winds & choppy water all day long had taken it toll as I was pretty tired after 12 hours on the water....Time to call it a day.....With the total fish count of 13 did get two over ten lbs which were females!! All released in good shape.....Still waiting for bigger fish!!! and a day with no winds!!! See ya on the water....Naked...

Sum guy in a float tube caught sum big crappie. I was in my pontoon float tube and couldn't find them. But I did throm some spinner baits to the grass ledges and caught during 2 days out there, a total of 9 bass. 2 striper schoolies (not legal) throwbacks, and 7 largemouths, most 1-3 lb range, but alas, One real nice 5-7 lb. I took pics! I tried varios methods and still havent thrown worms yet. I can't wait till they really start poppin. Going to Natoma with my daughter tomorrow. I'll tell y'all how that goes. Bill Crooks joined me and my lucky dog, Spike, for the Jolly Hookers Delta Striper NDO (non-derby outing). The target fish was 22.5". We caught 6 legals to 22” (Bill may have won some money, all of which went to covering gas expenses), released 4, released 2 undersized, lost 1 larger fish, lost 2-3 tails. A “scratch” day shallow trolling, all on bright Yo-Zuris. 8 hours, 56 miles. Water 58.4-59.4*, clear to dirty, very little debris; air 46-68*; sky overcast to clear; wind 0-4 mph. We launched at Hogback and trolled all day above and below the Rio Vista Bridge the last of the outgoing, all of the incoming and an hour of the outgoing. A tough day catching, very small fish (except the big one that got away), great company, nice weather. Thanks for the company Bill.

A friend and I went out to Clear Lake to see if we could get any luck catching some crappie. Well, it was a blast! We were using small jigs and bouncing them about fifteen feet down. Not more than 5 minutes into the trip and my buddy takes a HUGE old crappie! This crappie is so big that it hits the inside of my boat and rolls towards the stern. He said he'd been eating a lot of rice and that's the reason for the constipated tird. It was the size of 2 DD batteries end-to-end. And boy did it stink. He said he didn't have to wipe his hole because the tird was so dry. So that's my wonderful fishing trip in a nutshell. ~ Ron ~

Yesterday, I took Bill Bushey out to dunk sardines in the Sacto River below the Freeport Bridge. We started late and anchored about 10am. Bill caught a 5#er within the hour. And I didn't even get one good bite the whole time we were there. So I got skunked. We quit at 3pm cause the tide was still coming in. Thus causing the river currant to slow immensely. And He was going to the Kings game that nite to see T-Mac. That is the last time I go for stripers on an incoming tide up Freeport or Sacto way this season. The fish just don't bite during slow water. At least for me that is! I'm going back down to the southern delta this Friday for Florida strain black bass. They are my favorite anyway. Last Day of March & APRIL first......TWO DAY REPORT.........Went solo on Monday, launching at Hogback & soon realized this was a holiday for State workers!!!! Haven't seen this many boats in Steamboat & the lower Old Sac area in along time......Well, if you know my style of fishing I don't do GROUP fishing well!...Change of plans as I wanted to avoid heavy traffic fishing lanes....Decided to head up the mighty Sacto river & fish above Walnut grove towards Courtland....Without a doubt very little pressure up river....While I caught fish trolling deep running Yo-zuries never got into a major bite managing to pick up 6 stripes to 8 lbs...While trolling under the Courtland bridge my fishfinder started sounding off with continuing BEEPS.....Lots of small fish just under the shade area of bridge.....Picked up & fired up the electric motor & spooned a 1 oz. hopkins jig in green....Caught & released over 10 stripes in less than ten minutes!! None over 5 lbs!! This action was short lived as they vanished quickly....There was so many under the boat I snagged a few accidently ....Ended the day fishing for smallies in upper Steamboat.....In a nutshell, A sub-par day of fishing but did it avoiding the crowds downstream................TUESDAY.........Tom Ramage joined me for a day of striper hunting.....Just a normal amount of boats on the water on this Spring day...Tried shallow trolling in the lower steamboat area even though the high tide was three hours away...Picked up just one fish after an hour of trying....Pretty slow....Next tried the shoals at the Rio Vista bridge....A little better action as we got 4 stripes & lost two ( Quick release ) and had some tail stealers!! Just one other boat making the run & he also was getting bit...Next, tried the lower Old Sac making a few passes for nothing....Same location we killed them last Weds!!!! Go fish? Finding Cache slough clear enough to troll we tried that with just one pass.....No fish....With just an hour to go till the flood tide, we headed for DWC......Found the water the clearest it has been in over two weeks...Tom got the only fish in there after making three passes....A 8 pounder using a rainbow pattern......Next, tried inside Minor...Nothing deep trolling & few boats around....Don't like throwing swimbaits on the top of the tide but Tom got lucky and hit one about 8 lbs....Next, shot over to the courtland bridge & tried spooning...No fish around!...Late in the day with the tide going out & running out of time decided to finish off the last few hours of light throwing swimbaits in the lower Steamboat area.....GOOD MOVE as found them to be pretty active picking up half a dozen or so...Most fish caught were in less than two feet of water & would load up on a slow retrieve ..The problem was I forgot to charge my trolling batteries & had little power holding the boat!....No, we didn't get 36 fish like last Weds but had a good time catching enough schoolies to make it interesting......And the bonus is catching them plugging......Home in the dark again.....See ya on the water....Naked.

Art and I moved on to Sacto river for 1 then to west bank using BBR, Yo-zuri and Bombers all shallow for 3 more. Moved to east side and trolled deep using BBR's . Again moved back above Rio Vista on east side and trolled Bomber's shallow up to Sacto river and caught 1 more. Total for day 5 . Nice day when sun came out ..Fishing not too hot for us however water looks good and I continue to believe that stripers are coming hopefully in greater numbers ...

Pastor Steve joined me and my lucky dog, Spike, for some striper trolling. We caught & released 4 legals to 8#, released 4-6 undersized, lost 4-6 tails. We spent all day shallow trolling, all bright Yo-Zuris. 6 hours, 40 miles. Water 58.7*, clear to semi-clear, very little debris; air 42-63*; sky clear; wind 0-6 mph. We launched at Hogback and trolled the Sacramento River/its sloughs above and below the Rio Vista Bridge. We fished an incoming tide most of the day, an hour of the outgoing. hey pier fisherman, try this, buy those sabkini rigs (multi hooks) and make sure you by those really small hooks and drop the rig straight down with no bait and if their is any smelt or small fish they will start biting like crazy !!!!!!Once you catch a couple of smelt cut them up and cast it out. There are some really nice sized pacific mackerel.Or you can use them as live bait but make sure you cut a little part of the tail off so it will leave a blood trail for guitar fish or halibut.have fun fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fishing: The spring chinook fishery got off to a fast start March 16, with boat anglers averaging a fish for every 5.5 rods on the lower Columbia River between the Hayden Island west power lines and Bonneville Dam. The turnout was good, too. In all, 368 boats and 170 bank anglers were counted on both sides of the river during an aerial survey opening day. The highest concentration of boats - 110 - was near the Portland Airport, although 35 boats were counted between the Interstate 5 Bridge and the power lines. Most bank anglers were fishing immediately downstream from the dam, though the fishing there was slow. "We're getting a strong early showing, the best in several years," said Joe Hymer, WDFW fish biologist. "The best news is this run's just getting started, and we're expecting to see a lot of fish move upriver before it's all over." According to pre-season forecasts, 269,300 spring chinook will return to the Columbia River and its tributaries above Bonneville Dam, the third-largest run since 1977. That compares to just 86,230 fish last year. The chinook fishery from the Hayden Island power lines upstream to the dam runs seven days a week through March 23, then switches to six days a week - closing from one hour after official sunset Mondays to one hour before official sunrise Wednesdays - through April 30. The limit is one adult hatchery chinook per day. Below the Hayden Island power lines, chinook fishing opens daily downstream to Buoy 10 from March 24 through April 4. Fishing in that area, normally the focus of the lower river season, was held to just 12 days this year to protect weak Willamette River stocks. There, too, the limit is one hatchery adult chinook per day. As most anglers know, hatchery chinook can be identified by a clipped adipose fin. All wild chinook with an intact adipose fin must be released unharmed. Team J and L is currently fishing the Columbia River for Spring Chinook and taking reservations for Columbia, Lewis and Kalama rivers. Jet boat trips on the Columbia and Lewis rivers for 4 anglers are at a special price of just $580.00 and 2 person driftboat trips on the Kalama are $325.00. Its April already and spring is looking better everyday. J and L Guided Sportfishing is gearing up for Spring fishing on the Columbia, Cowlitz, Kalama and Lewis rivers. With winter steelhead season over and a new 18' Smithrock Riverboat and 2 25' Alumaweld Super Vees await christening on the waters of Southwest Washington. Spring time is one of the best times for an angler in Washington. Begginning in March, 269,300 spring chinook salmon start entering the Columbia river bound for the Cowlitz, Kalama and Lewis rivers as well as the upper tributaries above Bonneville dam. This years run will be the third largest since 1977. We will start fishing March 25th between the mouths of the Kalama and Lewis rivers on the Columbia until the lower river closes to all fishing on April 4th. Then we will fish above I-5 for the remainder of the Columbia's season. A majority of this run consists of 4 year old fish with some 5 year olds mixed in. These 4 year old fish average 12-25 pounds. Looking to catch the best eating salmon in the world? Springers are it so don't delay and call today to reserve your date. Stop wishing and lets go fishing!!! Mid-April we will move to fishing the North Fork of the Lewis and Kalama rivers. May is the month for maximum fishing opportunity. Spring Chinook fishing is at its peak with 4-7 "hook-ups" a day. I can't think of a more exciting time witnessing these fish smack a bait-wrapped K15 Kwikfish, a Brads diver and bait combo while backtrolling, or hover fishing "cocktail" baits in the deep holes of both rivers. Summerrun Steelhead are also in the rivers at the same time making for an added bonus! They are chrome-bright, powerful, and add an extra excitement to the day. Averaging 12-18 pounds, we incidently catch several of these beauties every spring salmon season. We are currently taking reservations for Columbia, Lewis and Kalama rivers. Jet boat trips on the Columbia and Lewis rivers for 4 anglers are at a special price of just $580.00 and 2 person driftboat trips on the Kalama are $325.00. I like Berryessa. Not only it is a pretty lake, but also, generally speaking, the fishing is much better than, say Folsom. Today, that was true. I went fishing with my friend Jim (Zeke, of Coastside fame), and Norman, my fishing friend, visiting my neighbor from England. He came to fish for salmon, so I took him fishing a few times. We were on the water by 9 am, trolling along the North facing shoreline between the end of the narrows and Skier's Cove. We set up the two down riggers at 30 ft, each one with Apex, watermelon and the red and white with the e-chip. First, we caught one king and a trout on the DR and then the bite moved close to the surface, and the two other watermelon apex, long lined at 150+ feet behind the boat. I also tried a white hoochie behind a pink dodger (the one with the splattering of pink) without any takers. As the morning progressed, the long lines started catching fish. We ended up with 8 fish, one king and seven trout, then the bite slowed down by 1 pm, so at 2 pm, we moved to the Dam and trolled for a while. We caught another trout and and one crappie!! The crappie hit the Apex trolled at 20 ft, with a set back of 40 ft or so.We were trolling over 90 ft or so, 100 ft or so away from the North shoreline. It was a great fishing day, until my comment that It was not my lucky day, caught up with us, in our way back. Early on I mentioned that I needed to get gas in the van. I need to mention that the gage does not work, so I keep an eye on the trip mileage. This time I read 340 miles when we were leaving Markley. Uh oh. . .possible trouble. . . A mile or so into the trip, the engine quit!! After a few minutes of . . . what are we going to do, shall we call somebody (by the way, no reception for a few miles) or shall we walk back to Markley, we had a collective MacGyver moment, and decided to cut the fuel line going into the outboard, and use the bulb to pump gas into the "P" bottle, and get 5 or 6 full bottles of gas. That got us going again to the small gas station by Lake Solano. To say that I was rather stupid by not keeping an eye on my mileage, is an understatement!! My friend Jim will not let me forget the moment! Having said that, I was very proud of our collective thinking coming together with such a clever solution. I will have to buy another plastic bottle of Arizona tea to replace the "P" bottle Mario

WEDS........MARCH 26th.......................FINALLY, A WIDE OPEN BITE ! Not being optimistic asking Tom Ramage to take time off from work and joining me for a day striper hunting was quickly erased.......Two factors were on my mind....Knowing it was gonna be Windy & my last two outings I struggled to catch half a dozen, which were all small schoolies......THIS IS HOW OUR DAY WENT...............Launched at Hogback and noticed just two other trailors in parking lot.....Seems the weather forecast has kept other fisherman off the water today? The winds were south/west at about 12 to 15 mph...No big thing as I have fished in worst conditions for sure....Started off shallow trolling just at the top of the tide in lower Steamboat...Pretty good chop on the water but running the boat at 5 mph had no problem with boat control.....Didn't go 30 yards when Tom got bit still letting his line out!...A nice 8 pounder....A quick release & back to trolling.....Bam! I got the next one.....slighty smaller the the first...I'm telling Tom take advantage of the situation cause the past two weeks fishing here the bite never last longer than an hour or so at the tide change........WRONG!!!!!! Long story short....We continued getting bit for the entire outgoing tide!! Not just in Steamboat, but around the corner in the lower Old Sac and all the way up to the Courtland bridge!!! No! we didn't fish the entire distance as we picked up and ran upstream above Walnut grove....Switched over to deep divers at Courtland as there is no shallow water there as it averages 15- 20 feet....at this time the tide was coming back in.....Still caught fish, not like the outgoing tide but enough to keep it interesting...Almost dark & entered Steamboat slough via the Sacto river & caught the last stripe of the day along with a few smallmouth.......Back to the launch running in the dark...Happy to report the total caught & released came to 36 fish ( none over 10 lbs) The wind was relentless and blew all day......Once again, the last one out of the parking lot at Hogback......A fun day for two tired fisherman...... While the action was the best so far this Spring, still no larger females!!.See ya on the water.....Naked....

Spent all day above the Rio Vista Bridge most of the day shallow trolling an outgoing tide, a few minutes throwing Fish Traps. We ended the day with a double, just missed a triple. Most on bright Yo-Zuris, one or two on bright B16s. 7 hours, 45 miles. Water 59*, clear to semi-clear, very little debris; air 45-65*; sky clear, overcast, clear; wind 3-7 mph. Bill & Ted shared a few of their "favorite" places with me & we caught fish in each. Thanks for the invite, great company Bill & Ted.

Caught 2 first troll which we hoped would continue ..Wrong!! Even went to Arts holy spot where the big guy upstairs seems to provide fish for him, however not this time. We hooked a baby striper only. We then went to rattle traps and trolled them in close and caught 4 stripers and 1bass all stripers were undersized. We moved and trolled some more for nada . Switched to bass fishing for 1 keeper size. All fish sent back to grow up. Nice day good company !

Monday I took Bill Bushey out with me to soak sardines in the Sacto River in the Freeport area. Whenever the Rio Vista area reads 9mph of wind at 4:30am and 12mph at Antioch, that means its gonna increase as the day goes on. There was only one other boat in the area fishing when we anchored at 7:30. We only could see them catching a few shakers all the time we were there. The current was very slow because of the incoming tide. We fished the Yolo side first until that boat left around 1:30. I had caught one 5#er in the morning. Bill had one 18incher also. Then at around 2pm when we re-anchored on the Sacto side, Bill hooked a great 8#er. We were both thrilled at seeing a decent fish. Those 3 fish were the only good bites we had all day. The rest of the day we were bitten by shakers. Not very aggressive shakers either. In fact Bill's 8#er bit very lightly. In fact all the fish were hooked on the lips. We quit at 4:30pm so we could drive home in the traffic and be with our ladies. Ha! Ha! That's it!! Good fishin' Jerry

MONDAY.........MARCH 24th....................SPRING DOLDRUMS????????Still waiting for the influx of larger stripes in the lower delta. With dirty water below Rio Vista bridge & same for Cache & DWC ,the only semi productive area's I can find are Old Sac, Steamboat & Minor.....And the fishing is getting very stale in these locations with the same occasional mini bite with a fish here & there......I'm thinking the reduced flows upstream have something to do with the action? Water temps are perfect. Seems I'm catching the same old small schoolies that have been holding for the past few weeks....The normal catch a fish & repeat a run through them has not been paid off with hook ups..Same thing with other boats I have observed trolling....THIS IS HOW MY DAY WENT........ After launching at Hogback started shallow trolling just at the start of the outgo in lower Steamboat....Caught 3 stripes that averaged 3 lbs!!! and lost another....After a couple hours gave up the trolling effort & went to throwing 1/2 oz swimbaits.....Managed to get bit three times & brought in 2 fish. nothing over 5 lbs!! At noon, flipped a coin.....Tails....Minor....Heads.......Old Sac river......Tails brought me to a very crowded Minor.....Trolled for a couple hours picking up 2 fish using deep diving yozuries......Tried plugging swimbaits at the bottom of the tide and got one fish ( 7 lbs ) With the SLOW striper action all day, decided to do something different...Headed for Sutter slough & brought out the ulta-lights.....Caught a pretty good number of smallmouths trolling the rip rap with orange/red speedtraps.....only one over 3 lbs & all were pre-spawn bass. Its now late in the day and the delta wind is really picking up....Time to head to the barn & get out of dodge......Maybe a better striper bite in the Old Sac river area?? Don't know as that was a HEADS........See ya on the river......Naked.....

and spring is looking better everyday. Additional information can be obtained online at http://www.jandlguidedsportfishing.com and http://columbiariveranglers.com or by phone at 206-920-2428

FRIDAY MARCH 21st...............Only got one day out this week and what a different bite!! Launched at Hogback with my wife Sandra...Late start, as we put in at 8:30am.and the parking lot had over 20 boat trailors including Mark Wilson's rig......Missed the top of the tide in Steamboat as the tide was already going out a foot or so..It seemed the river has less flow than last week and with the outgoing tide I couldn't find my 5-7 foot water....The YOZURI is a great shallow running lure but not in three feet of water.......Headed for Minor to try some deep trolling & maybe throwing some swimbaits......Lots of other fisherman in this body of water and talking to a some, they said they caught a few..We put in three hours of trolling & nothing!! Decided to try throwing traps as my wife has never caught a stripe using this method.......Second cast, Sandy picks up a 7 pounder...History has been made!!! My buddy Bill Meyer also got one stripe throwing from his alumaweld.....Nothing for me after over a hundred cast.....Next, we decided to head back to Steamboat to finish the day & catch the incoming tide right to the top as we missed it in the early morning.......We found a mini bite just an hour before the flood stage....All small fish less than 5 lbs....just a fish here & there as the bite was not aggressive like last week and no tails getting ripped off.....Got to blame something on a SLOW bite......OK! Full moon will do.......Returned to Hogback just before dark and only one rig left in parking lot....Mr. Wilson's.....Found out Mark had an off day also...Total damage.....6 fish trolling & one 7 pounder ( largest ) on a fish trap......A tough day on the water...See ya ...Naked....

A buddy and I fished the delta today, with no luck. We fished the Sacramento, Collinsville, the San Joaquin and False River. We trolled bombers and yo-zuris and could not buy a bite. The water was murky and windy which did not help us one bit. From the reports that I've been reading I expected the water clarity to be better. Eventhough we didn't catch any fish it felt good to be out on the water after a long winter. It seemed like fishing was tough for most as I did not see any nets flying. What channel do most people used out there? I was on channel 68 and it was very quite.

Wednesday. My lucky dog, Spike, and I caught & released 3 legals to 4#, released 3 undersized, lost 4 tails. Spent all of the day above the Rio Vista Bridge, most of the day shallow trolling, an hour deep trolling, a few minutes throwing Fish Traps, jigging. Two legals caught trolling shallow, one deep (all on bright Yo-Zuris), one undersized jigging, two shallow trolling. 6.5 hours, 44 miles. Water 56.7*, clear to dirty, very little debris; air 45-65*; sky clear, overcast, clear; wind 0-10 mph. We launched at Hogback. A few hours of the out going tide, clear; most of the day an incoming tide, clear to semi-clear to dirty. A day of variable weather (clear to cloudy to clear, wind o-10 mph) for a few small legals (better than a skunk). Regards.

Camanche was chosen as the site for the Mar. derby by the Jolly Hookers. The site was great; but the bite was pooor!! 38 fishermen managed to catch oly 19 fish. If you do the math we averaged only 1/2 fish per fisherman. That's pooor!! The top three fishermen need the balance beam to determine the winners. John Holkko did best with his 1 lb 15 oz first place rainbow. John Frantz was close with his 1 lb 13 oz second place fish, and Darrel Toms wasn't far behind with a 1 lb 12 oz third place fish. All many of us could say was " wait til next time". Our hosts did their best to calm us down with a spread of poor boys, salads, chips, sodas and indiv. pies. I think they accomplished their goal!! Thanks to Bob Griggs and Jim Bennett hosts superb!!!!! Next derby is scheduled for Collins Lake on April 15 ( a happy tax day) Hil Felton

St. Patrick's Day. Pastor Steve was able to get away for a day during one of the busiest weeks of his year. We caught 8 legals to 6#, released 6 legals. Pastor Steve kept 2 for a member of his church (who Steve called while we were on the water) to celebrate the birth of his new baby. We released 2 undersized, lost 2, lost 12 tails. We spent most of the day shallow trolling, a few minutes throwing Fish Traps. All fish caught shallow trolling 4-8’ of water on the Clown Yo-Zuri (the one with the smaller lip). 7 hours, 50 miles (we devoted time , miles & gas to checking out several areas below the Rio Vista Bridge). Water 54.2-58*, clear to dirty, very little debris; air 45-68*; sky clear; wind 0-5 mph. We launched at Hogback and started the day trolling at 7:30, the end of the out going tide. We trolled above & below the Rio Vista Bridge . We had PhD "catchers" on the water today, Bill Crooks & Ted Fagunes, Clyde Wands and a friend. They all said it was a tough day, had to really work for the Stripers. The best bite seemed to be t the end of the incoming tide. At take out Clyde Wands cleaned Steve’s fish (what a Guy! Sorry Clyde this doesn't make up for not going to church Palm Sunday)! Thanks Clyde. Thanks to Bill, Ted & Clyde for on the Delta reports today, we were all "scratching" for fish. Thanks, again, Steve for the great company.

I had a last minute opportunity to go out with Rod Bowden. It was an early start, long day. We caught & released 4 legal stripers to 5#, one 3# Steelhead!, 2 undersized stripers, lost 12 tails. Spent most of the day shallow trolling, some deep trolling & throwing Fish Traps. All fish caught shallow trolling an incoming tide on a variety of Yo-Zuris (the Steelhead hit a Pearl B16). 10 hours, all areas above the Rio Vista Bridge, started trolling at 4:15 a.m.! A "chancy weather day turned out fine. Water 58.5-60*, clear to semi-clear (1-2' visibility), very little debris; air 40-68*; sky clear to cloudy; wind 0-2 mph. Thanks for the company Rod.

Took a newbie with me who when my back was turned looking at my GPS told me I think we're getting a bite, and then I turned around to see the rod straight and pumping, ran over there to set it, but too late... For all newbies.. sturgeon fishing is a team sport... if you see it set it regardless of which rod it is :-) .. That water is looking fishable for striper which might be the next trip ....

Tuesday. A late report as my wife called me on the way home saying out daughter-in-law was in the hospital delivering twin baby boys! We packed up and headed down to Campbell. Mother, boys (both very cute (what else?) and new father doing well. Jim Brown (the father of one of my daughter's best friends) and I met for the first time and went out for stripers. Water and catching are improving. 13 legal stripers (all shallow trolling) to 7#, no undersized, 12 lost tails. 8.5 hours, 37 miles. Water 56.4-57.7*, clear to dirty (6”-2' visibility), very little debris; air 48-68*; sky clear; wind 2-5 mph. We launched at Hogback Island and deep & shallow trolled. threw Fish Traps & bait fished above the Rio Vista Bridge in 3-4 different places on the end of the incoming, slack & beginning of incoming tide. When trolling shallow we used the smaller lip (they come in two lip sizes, small and smaller) shallow diving Yo-Zuri with the orange head, yellow back, silver side, white belly with a white tail in 4.5-8’ of water. One Striper took my lure and 3-5 seconds later takes Jim’s, one legal striper, two identical lures in its mouth. We tried Fish Traps in a couple of places, two hook-ups, none landed. We also fished sardines for awhile, nothing. A good day on the Delta, first good day of catching in 2008. Nice meeting Jim Brown, great guy, thanks for the company Jim. Ps - I think the 2008 Striper catching season may have started (only real fishermen, like Rod Bowden, have been able to catch fish earlier).

Water 57.4-58*, clear to semi-clear (1-2' visibility), some surface debris; air 48-68*; sky clear to overcast; wind 0-2 mph. We launched at Hogback. We shallow & deep trolled, threw Fish Taps & bait fished in 2-3 places above the Rio Vista Bridge on the incoming tide (clear), outgoing tide (semi-clear). Another nice day on the Delta, great company, poor catching. Thanks for the company Bob. PS - The water is real close to turning into "catching" water.

About 1 hour into trolling WHAM! My buddy starts to panic and doesn't know what to do. I tell him there's no turning back now, so he hangs over the port side and drops 2 pounds of high-starch tirds, we circle back around for a second look and their the size of the TP roll when there's none left, ya know? THURSDAY, MARCH 13th.........3 DAY REPORT.....................CONSISTENCY is what most anglers strive for and after fishing three days in a row I found a pattern where I could predict a decent bite with the clearing water & tidal movement......Fished Monday with Guy Brown Fished Tuesday solo & Weds in Bill Meyer's boat.....Each day got better with numbers as we made sure we had our lines in the water at the top of income & start of the outgo.....No brainer here as the water is the clearest at the top of the income & as the outgo starts to rip we lose the visibility to some degree...........Methods used were shallow troll, deep troll & throwing half oz traps......All fish caught were small males with my largest going just 10 pounds......Lots of short strikes & many lost tails.....On the shallow troll boat speed was important as the Y0-ZURIES performed the best at 5-6 miles per hour!.....Hard to outrun these small schoolies as I don't think you can? Did not fish anywhere below the Rio Vista bridge as I pretty much stayed in the North Delta & lower Old Sac river area.....At this writing very little boat pressure from other anglers.....I'm sure, subject to change soon.......Thanks to Mother nature giving me three days of good weather.......Once again, Not a red hot bite, but periods of action on & off as it seems the stripes are scattered with a school here & there....Top of the tide best action......Well, its that time of the year as the pear trees in Courtland are starting to pop their blooms.....and the river is starting to settle down & clear...A few weather systems coming through next few days & hopefully back to the delta soon.....See ya on the river......Naked.....P.S. Fireman Jack quit your new job. There's fish out to be caught...

3/9/2008 – Launched at Lake Pardee with the lady at 6:30 am. Started off drifting night crawlers for bass along the rocky points and submerged islands. No action for about an hour so we started trolling along the dam and spillway. No action so we trolled up the river arm top lining dodgers with night crawlers. We finally had a few bites around 10:00 am. After that the action was fairly steady until about 2:00 when we really got a lot of action way up in the canyon along the rocky wall to the northwest. We ended up with three rainbow trout and three kokanee all caught top lining night crawlers behind dodgers at about 1.2-1.5 mph. Lines were between 70’ and 200’ behind the boat. Lost four fish and had many other hits. The trout were 10”-14” and the kokanee were about the same size. Nothing on the downrigger trolled at depths from 10’ to 60’. I marked lots of kokanee down around 30’ to 40’ but they would not strike. I tried different speeds, different leader lengths, different lures, etc. – but no takers. The water temperature was 55 degrees.

It sucked. 5 fish all day for 12 lines in the ice. Definately not as good as it has been the last two months but the ice and shoreline are both holding good. If you are interested there should be at least one more good weekend unless some warm storm(s) come through. Anchored about 8am to catch the tailend of the outgoing tide. I started us off with a good 5 1/2# striper caught on grass shrimp around 10am. The fish didn't bite very good for Dan. He caught 6 shakers. He did miss one good bite. His day will be coming. He usually kills me in black bass fishing. Anyway, I ended up with 2 limits of stripers. The others were: 4 1/2, 3, and 2#ers. We stayed until a good hour and a half beyond the change of outgoing tide (5:20pm) still no decent bites. They didn't even touch our sardines. Oh! I did catch those last three stripers on sardines. Went up the northside when the wind kicked up. and got pushed about 1 1/2 mile. Saw a cove on the South side so I headed for it. Reeled all in and pitched spinnerbaits to the shore. slow rollin' em. no crap, 1st cast to a log, caught and released a 4-5# largemouth. In the shallows there are plenty of crawdads around. (hint for the next time I go out) came back up the south side trollin' crawlers and cought 2 nice stocker size trout. I chatted up people on the bank and they had 2 trout. Sac Co Sheriff Sgt. The event will be held at B&W Marina Resort on June 28, 2008 from 8:00-12:00. If you are able to volunteer your boat and time to take a less fortunate child fishing for a few hours, please email me. Insurance is provided by the CAST Foundation. Children are secured through United Cerebral Palsey, Make a Wish Foundation and Sacramento and Elk Grove area disabled children orginazations. Please help by sharing your passion with these children and introduce them to a sport that can change their lives! For more information in CAST, visit www.castforkids.org.

Guy Brown and almost always Lucky Dog, Spike went out to try for Sturgeon today. Launched at Belden at 7:00 fished all the incoming and a bit of the outgoing. Water was still dirty (less than 1' visibility). Used shad, ghost, grass, sardine and multiple scents for 1 undersized striper. A beautiful day mostly uninterrupted by any kind of pumps or take downs of any sort. Should have brought a Good Book to read! Didn't mark a lot a fish and didn't catch any of the marks we saw. That's it for today. Blessings.

Seems there was a little fire in a boat in a slough off the Moke last Friday. Jigging Gene Marzolf and Hap Hammonds were fishing the sloughs looking for clear water and stripers. Gene had his heater going and they both began to smell something burning. Gene looked down and the butt of his rod was aflame. Hap about fell out of the boat laughing. Gives new meaning to Hot Rod doesn't it? Ask Gene about it first chance you get. They did find some clear water and got one striper and one crappie. j
